Macy’s From A Small Fancy Dry Goods Store To a Billion Dollar Empire

Ellen Davidson
Every time somebody mentions the name Macy’s, the first thing that comes to mind is that huge mall or department store filled with the latest fashion apparel, clothing, shoes, handbags, underwear ,lingerie ,juniors ,dinnerware ,cookware ,crystal ,nambe, Waterford, Wedgwood, Lenox, mikasa, cuisine art, kitchen aid, appliances, cosmetics and just about everything else that you can think of. What most of us know is that this store had not always been as it is now. Although most of us could not really imagine Macy’s without signature products like Kenneth, Cole, Hilfiger, Calvin, Klein, DKNY, Claiborne, Clinique, Chanel, lauder, Lancôme, Ralph Lauren or polo, Macy’s actually started out as a small fancy dry good store on the corner of 14th street and 16th Avenue in New York way back in 1858.

When Macy’s first came into business, it did not have the huge inventory of goods that it has today. In fact, during the early days, During its first few days in business, Macy’s is said to thrive on simply selling house ware, bedding, sheets, bath, towels, and comforter. Occasionally, the old Macy store would carry some fancy luggage and suitcases but that is just about all there is there to it at that time. In fact, the sales of Macy’s during its first day totaled just about $11.06! Even in 1858, that amount is not really that much! However, the not so good turn out of Macy’s business during its first few days did not deter its founder Rowland Hussey Macy. He was determined to make his store a success and worked day and night to make things better.

The efforts of Rowland Macy paid off and by the end of its first year of operations, the first Macy’s store grossed almost $90,000 in sales. For a start-up company like Macy’s at that time, the $90,000 gross sale is already something. After deducting all overhead cost and other expenses, Mr. Macy still had some profits left to help him expand his business operations. The following year, he started stocking his store with more merchandizes and expanded its operations little by little. There were many challenges along the way for Mr. Macy was not the type who would easily give up on something that he believes in. Besides, as the years go by, the small store in the corner of 14th street and 16th Avenue in New York gained many loyal customers that Mr. Macy simply cannot just give up on what he had started.

Macy’s became a real department store in 1877 about 19 years after its first store started operations. The first Macy’s department store occupied the ground space of 11 adjacent buildings at that time. After the establishment of its first department store in new York, Macy’s moved on to establish more department stores and malls all over the country.

Macy and Company, Inc.
in full R.h. Macy And Company, Inc ., major American department store chain. Its principal outlet, the 11-story department store that occupies a city block at New York City's Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway), was for many years physically the largest single store in the country. Headquarters are in New York City.

The company grew out of a partnership founded in lower Manhattan in 1858 by Rowland H. Macy (1822?–77), whose several previous attempts at retailing had all failed. Under the close supervision of Margaret Getchell, a Macy cousin and pioneer businesswoman, the store prospered after the American Civil War, relying on extensive advertising and its reputation for value. The company's red star trademark was derived from a tattoo borne by founder R.H. Macy.

Macy’s Respect For Diversity Strategy Goes A Long Way
When Rowland Hussey Macy started the first Macy’s store in 1858 at the corner of 14th street and 16th Avenue in New York, he had envisioned a company that will open new grounds in doing business. He envisioned a store that would not just sell products like clothing and shoes, but would also provide equal opportunities to men and women in terms of career. In fact, Macy’s was the first to promote a woman to an executive position in the retail industry. Margaret Getchell rose among the ranks on Macy employees to become one of the first female executives in the history of the United States. The move of Macy’s at that time was considered very bold since women were not really known to hold such high positions during that era. more
